Biography

Colin Marks earned BSME and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie-Mellon University) and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland. He served for in the U.S. Army with the Army Reactor Group where he carried out analyses of closed-cycle, gas-turbine power plants. After serving in the Army, he joined the faculty of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Maryland from which he retired as a Professor and as its Director of Graduate Studies.

 
Professor Marks' area of expertise is thermo-fluids, but he has taught courses in a variety of area and he currently teaches MATLAB and Computer-Aided Engineering Analysis. His main areas of research have been buoyancy-driven flows, with applications ranging from jellyfish and oil-slick barriers to fire-driven flows; tractor-trailer truck aerodynamics; and fluid damping of oscillating structures.
 
Professor Marks is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Maryland and he is a member of the ASME.
